Three days to register your address, four months for the rest.
In Austria the Meldezettel, your address registration, is due within three days of moving in, and the Anmeldebescheinigung, your EU residence certificate, within four months. Skipping the address registration can cost a fine of up to €726.

Step 1
Register your address
Within three days of moving in, your landlord signs the Meldezettel with you and you hand it to the local Meldebehörde. It is free. Keep the Meldebestätigung you get back: you will be asked for it everywhere.

Step 2
Get your social insurance number
If you are employed, your employer requests the Sozialversicherungsnummer for you when you are hired, and your e-card arrives by post. An employee does not need a Steuernummer: income tax is withheld from your pay.

Step 3
Apply for your registration certificate
Staying more than three months? Apply in person for the Anmeldebescheinigung within four months of arriving. It costs €44, and someone without a job needs proof of full health cover.

I start a job in Vienna next month. Do I need to get a tax number, and who gives me my social insurance number?
As an employee, you don't ask for a tax number: your employer withholds income tax from your pay. What you do need is a social insurance number, and your employer requests it for you when you are hired. Your e-card then arrives by post, and until it does the number is enough at the doctor's. A Steuernummer only comes into play if you become self-employed: then you tell the Finanzamt within a month.
