Three months to register, then a tax number with its own rules.
In Bulgaria you apply in person for your residence certificate within three months of arriving. Your tax number then depends on who issues it: the Ministry of the Interior (the LNCh) or, if you are tax resident without one, the tax agency (a service number).

Step 1
Apply for your residence certificate
Within three months of arriving, go in person to the Migration directorate of the Ministry of the Interior. The paper certificate is issued the same day and costs €3.58 on the 2026 fee list of the Varna directorate.

Find out where your personal number appears
With long-term residence, the Ministry of the Interior issues your LNCh, ten digits, which is also your tax ID. The paper certificate does not list it, so ask at the counter and keep a written note.

Step 3
Sort out your health cover
If nothing else insures you, you pay at least €24.81 a month to the NAP (since 1 August 2026). Then choose a family doctor under contract with the NZOK, the national health fund.

Not a separate one. In Bulgaria your tax ID is your personal number, the LNCh: ten digits, given by the Ministry of the Interior once your long-term residence is registered. If you become tax resident without one, the tax agency can issue a service number on request. One practical point: the paper residence certificate doesn't list the LNCh, so ask at the counter where yours appears and keep a written note of it.
