03The paperwork

14 days to register, three months to insure.

In Switzerland the clock starts the day you arrive: 14 days to register with your commune, and before your first day of work if you are employed. Health insurance follows within three months, and your canton sets the fees, the tax and the premium rules.

04How Hello Expat helps

Your Swiss steps, in the order you meet them

Hello Expat lists each step with its official source and the date it was checked. Moovy, an AI assistant, answers your questions and writes the emails or letters that you read and send yourself. It does not sign, file or represent you.

  1. 1

    Step 1

    Register with your commune

For a stay of more than three months, register within 14 days of arriving, and before you start work if you are employed. The canton then issues your permit: L for under a year, B for five years.

Source: State Secretariat for Migration (SEM)

  2. 2

    Step 2

    Let your AVS number arrive

Your 13-digit AVS number, starting with 756, is normally issued automatically when you settle: there is nothing to apply for. Without a C permit, your employer withholds tax at source from your pay.

Source: Federal Social Insurance Office (OFAS)

  3. 3

    Step 3

    Take out health insurance

You have three months from taking up residence to join a Swiss insurer. In time, the cover is backdated to your arrival. Premiums differ by insurer, canton and deductible, and priminfo.ch compares them.

You

I've just moved to Zurich. Do I have to take out health insurance myself, and by when?

Moovy

Yes. Everyone living in Switzerland must have basic health insurance from a Swiss insurer, and you choose it yourself. You have three months from the day you take up residence. Sign up within that time and cover is backdated to the day you arrived; later, it only starts at sign-up and a surcharge can be added. Premiums depend on the insurer, the canton and your deductible, so compare them on priminfo.ch. Your European health card only covers the first weeks.

    A vault for your papers

Your documents are encrypted before they are stored, with a different key for each document, kept apart from our servers. Nobody on the team has a tool to open them. Moovy reads each document you add to file it, and every reading appears in your log. You can delete everything whenever you like.

When Moovy reads a document, the text is processed by our AI provider, in the United States.
