In Germany your address comes first: no address, no Anmeldung, and no Steuer-ID, which only arrives by post after it. You have two weeks to register, and appointments in big cities can take longer than that.

Step 1
Get your landlord's confirmation
The law obliges your landlord to give you the Wohnungsgeberbestätigung within two weeks. It is a separate signed statement: the lease does not replace it.

Step 2
Register your address
Book an appointment at the Bürgeramt and register within two weeks of moving in. You get your Meldebestätigung, so keep it: your bank and employer will ask for it. It is free in Berlin and Munich.

Step 3
Wait for your Steuer-ID letter
The federal tax office (BZSt) posts your Steuer-ID after your Anmeldung, usually two to four weeks later. Put your name on your letterbox, because it only comes by post.

Two things, and the clock is two weeks from the day you move in. First, ask your landlord for the Wohnungsgeberbestätigung: the law makes them give it to you, and the lease does not replace it.
