Three numbers open most doors: the AFM for tax, the AMKA for health, and the police certificate for your right to stay. Some of the first steps happen in person, and most forms are in Greek.

Step 1
Get your AFM online
Apply on myAADE, the tax authority's portal, then confirm who you are by video call or at a tax office. It costs nothing, and the official estimate is 30 minutes once your application is filed and your identity checked.

Step 2
Register your residence after three months
The first three months need only your ID card or passport. After that, go in person to the police for the certificate of registration of a Union citizen. The fee is a €0.50 stamp, and the certificate is handed over on the spot.

Step 3
Activate your AMKA
Go in person to an e-EFKA office or a KEP citizens' service centre, with proof that you live in Greece and a document showing your situation. It is free and takes 15 to 30 minutes at the counter. Then you register with a personal doctor.

I am Dutch and I have just moved to Athens. Can I get my AFM without queuing at a tax office?
Yes, in most cases. You file the request online on myAADE, the tax authority's portal, and an officer checks your identity by video call, straight away or by appointment. You can also go to a tax office if you prefer. The AFM is free. Scan your ID card before you start: an incomplete file is a common reason for rejection. Documents such as a marriage certificate may need an apostille and a translation.
