03The paperwork

The papers waiting for you in the Netherlands

Almost everything starts at your gemeente, the town hall: if you stay more than four months, you have five days after arriving to register. Your BSN, your DigiD and your health insurance all hang on that appointment.

04How Hello Expat helps

Your first three steps in the Netherlands, in order

Moovy, your personal assistant, builds your list from where you come from and who moves with you. Each step shows its official source and the date we checked it.

  1. 1

    Step 1

    Register at your gemeente

Staying more than four months? You register in the BRP within five days of arriving, with your partner and children. It is free, and your BSN is issued at that appointment.

    Source: Rijksoverheid

  2. 2

    Step 2

    Request your DigiD

With your BSN, apply in the DigiD app or on digid.nl. The activation letter goes to your BRP address, and its code works for 21 days.

    Source: DigiD

  3. 3

    Step 3

    Take out basic health insurance

You have four months from your arrival. Insurers must accept everyone at the same price, and children under 18 pay no premium for the basic cover.

You

I move to Amsterdam next month with my partner and two children. How long do I have to register, and what do I get?

Moovy

Five days after you arrive, if you will stay more than four months, and your partner and children come with you. Check whether your gemeente asks for an appointment. You register in the BRP, the municipal population register, and your BSN is issued there. With it you can ask for DigiD and take out Dutch health insurance, which you need within four months. If you stay less than four months, the non-residents register also gives you a BSN.

    A vault for your papers

Your documents are encrypted before they are stored, with a different key for each document, kept apart from our servers. Nobody on the team has a tool to open them. Moovy reads each document you add to file it, and every reading appears in your log. You can delete everything whenever you like.

When Moovy reads a document, the text is processed by our AI provider, in the United States.
