The papers waiting for you in Portugal
The NIF comes first, because the lease, the bank and most other steps ask for it. Your residence certificate comes from the Câmara Municipal, not from AIMA, and you have 30 days after your third month to ask for it.

Step 1
Book your NIF appointment
The NIF is free. Book at a Finanças office or a Loja do Cidadão through the Portal das Finanças, or by phone on +351 217 206 707. Without an appointment, you will not be seen.

Step 2
Ask your town hall for your certificate
After three months, the Câmara Municipal issues the certificate for EU citizens. Ask within 30 days of your third month. It costs €15 and is valid for 5 years.

Step 3
Register at your health centre
Your número de utente is issued the first time you visit a public health unit. Take your ID, your NIF, your address in Portugal and your residence certificate.

I'm an EU citizen and I'll stay in Portugal for a year. Do I go to AIMA for my residence certificate?
No. As an EU citizen, you ask your Câmara Municipal, the town hall of your commune, for the Certificado de Registo. For you, AIMA only handles permanent residence, after five years. You apply between the end of your third month and 30 days after it. The certificate costs €15 and lasts five years. Staying past that deadline without applying can cost you a fine of €400 to €1,500.

A vault for your papers
Your documents are encrypted before they are stored, with a different key for each document, kept apart from our servers. Nobody on the team has a tool to open them. Moovy reads each document you add to file it, and every reading appears in your log. You can delete everything whenever you like.
