03The paperwork
Three papers decide your first month in Slovenia
You ask for your registration certificate within your first three months, then declare your address within 8 days of moving in. Your tax number only follows once the address is on the register, and banks ask for it.

Register your stay
Ask the upravna enota for your potrdilo o prijavi prebivanja as soon as you arrive, and before your third month ends. It is valid for up to five years.

Declare your address
Within 8 days of moving in, declare your temporary address at the upravna enota. Bring your lease or the owner's consent.

Your tax number follows
Once your address is on the population register, FURS registers you on its own and issues your 8-digit davčna številka. There is no form to fill in.

Do I have to apply for a tax number when I move to Slovenia?
Usually not. When you declare your address at the upravna enota, the tax authority, FURS, registers you from the population register and gives you your davčna številka, an eight-digit number, with no form to fill in. You only apply yourself, with form DR-02, if you earn income or own property in Slovenia before you have an address there. Keep the number handy: banks ask for it when you open an account.
