How do I get my AFM (Greek tax number)?
The AFM (Αριθμός Φορολογικού Μητρώου, tax registration number) is your Greek tax identifier: you will be asked for it to rent, open an account, sign an employment contract or buy a property. The AADE, the Greek tax authority, issues it free of charge together with a κλειδάριθμος (access code for online services). The application is submitted online on the myAADE portal, then your identity is verified by video call or at the counter of a tax office.
- Costs
- Free
- Timeframes
- Estimated duration: 30 minutes, once the application is submitted and your identity verified
Steps
- Prepare your scanned documents (see Documents). An incomplete file is a ground for rejection.
- Submit the application online on the myAADE portal, via the dedicated application ΑΦΜ ΚΑΙ ΚΛΕΙΔΑΡΙΘΜΟΣ on the myAADE portal (application for an AFM and access code for an individual). According to the official sheet, the application is submitted exclusively by electronic means.
- Have your identity verified, in one of two ways:
- by video call with an agent via myAADElive, immediately with the first available agent or by appointment;
- in person, by appointment, at a ΔΟΥ (tax office) or a ΥΦΕ (tax services unit).
- Receive your AFM and your access code. The total estimated duration is 30 minutes.
- If you cannot do the procedure yourself, a third party can do it with a special authorisation whose signature is authenticated. This third party must themselves have an AFM and be a certified user of the AADE's online services.
Documents
- EU citizen: copy of your valid national identity card.
- Other foreigners: copy of your valid passport.
- Third-country national who is a tax resident in Greece: valid residence permit, or any other valid document proving your legal stay in Greece.
- Depending on your situation: marriage or civil partnership certificate, dissolution certificate, birth certificates and consent of both parents for a minor child.
- Non-resident who does not do the procedure themselves: declaration appointing a tax representative (φορολογικός εκπρόσωπος) and declaration of acceptance by this representative, with authenticated signatures.
- Foreign public documents: apostille or legalisation, and official translation where required.
The official sheet does not ask for proof of address in its list of documents.
Costs and timelines
- Cost: free.
- Timeline: about 30 minutes in total once the file is complete, according to the official estimate. The wait to get a counter appointment can vary.
Common pitfalls
- Paying an intermediary unnecessarily. The procedure is free and can be done remotely by video call. A professional is only useful if your situation is complex or if you cannot connect.
- Foreign documents not apostilled or not translated. This is a frequent cause of rejection: check before submitting.
- The tax representative. The subject only concerns certain non-residents. The detailed rules (AADE decision A.1069/2024) could not be read: ask the AADE whether you must appoint one while you live outside Greece.
- Confusing AFM and tax residence. The AFM can be issued to a resident or a non-resident. Becoming a Greek tax resident has consequences for your taxes in your home country: this is the "Tax" theme, to be discussed with an expert if your situation is not simple.
What changes by country of origin
- EU citizens: your valid national identity card is enough as proof of identity.
- Icelandic, Liechtenstein, Norwegian and Swiss citizens: the official sheet only mentions the identity card for citizens of an EU Member State; it asks other foreigners for the passport. Plan for your passport.
- British citizens (Scots included): passport compulsory. Since Brexit, you are a third-country national: if you are a tax resident in Greece, attach your Greek residence permit. The British government states that you must register to obtain an AFM (followed by an income tax return and an asset declaration each year) and that you generally need one to buy a property or receive Greek benefits.
