Everything runs on your OIB, the personal identification number, and each office has its own role: the police for your stay, the tax office for taxes, the HZZO for health. Declaring your stay late costs a €20 fine.

Step 1
Declare your address
Staying more than three months? Tell the police where you live within 15 days of arriving, using form 6b (Obrazac 6b).

Declare your temporary stay and collect your OIB
Go to your local police station no later than eight days after your first three months end, with form 1b. You leave with a free attestation, and the police give you your OIB on the spot, so there is no trip to the tax office.

Join the HZZO
Not insured in another EU country? Register at the HZZO regional office within eight days of your stay being approved. Employees and pensioners with an S1 are covered another way. Then you choose your family doctor.

I am moving to Split from Germany. Do I have to go to the tax office to get my OIB?
Usually not. When you declare your temporary stay at the police station, the police give you your OIB on the spot. You only go to the Porezna uprava, the tax administration, if you need the number earlier, for a bank account or a purchase. As an EU citizen, you can then ask for it online with an e-Građani login, or at the counter with the request form and your ID. Keep the OIB certificate: you will be asked for it often.
