The word ZUS makes Polish entrepreneurs wince. It stands for Zakład Ubezpieczeń Społecznych, the social insurance institution, and for a sole trader it means a monthly bill that exists whether you billed anything or not. The good news is that starting out is cushioned. ZUS contributions for the self-employed in Poland come in four steps, and knowing them is worth money.
Which ZUS contributions do you pay at the start?
All figures below are monthly, 2026, and exclude the health contribution unless stated.
- Ulga na start: no social contributions for six calendar months; if you start mid-month, the six months count from the following month. You still pay the health contribution, and you earn no pension, sickness or accident rights for that period. It applies if this is your first business or you had none for at least 60 months, and you do not work for your former employer in the same field (current or previous year).
- Reduced base for 24 months (the "preferential" contributions): the base is at least 30% of the minimum wage, 1,441.80 zloty (30% of 4,806), which gives 456.18 zloty with voluntary sickness insurance (chorobowe) or 420.86 zloty without. The same first-business and former-employer conditions apply.
- Small ZUS plus (mały ZUS plus): after that, if last year's revenue did not exceed 120,000 zloty, contributions follow your average income, with a base between 30% of the minimum wage and 60% of the projected average wage. From 2026 you can use it for 36 months in every 60 months of activity.
- Full rate: the base is at least 60% of the projected average wage, 5,652 zloty in 2026, which costs 1,926.76 zloty with sickness insurance and the FP and FS funds, or 1,788.29 zloty without sickness insurance. FP and FS stop at 55 for women and 60 for men.
What do ZUS contributions cover?
They are not a single tax but several insurances, each with a rate. The 2026 rates are 19.52% for the pension, 8% for disability, 1.67% for accidents at work (the rate for small businesses with up to nine insured people) and 2.45% for the voluntary sickness insurance, plus 2.45% for the FP and FS funds at the full rate. The health contribution is separate.
Sickness insurance is voluntary, but without it you get no sick pay and no maternity allowance. A reduced base also means a lower Polish pension later, since the pension depends mostly on the contributions accumulated. These are choices to make knowingly.
Which step you are on, and whether you qualify for the next one, depends on dates and previous activity, including any business you ran abroad. Moovy, our AI assistant, can map your dates against the rules with you. ZUS gives the final answer, so ask it in writing if your history is mixed.
What is the health contribution?
It is due from day one, even during ulga na start, and depends on your tax regime (see starting a business in Poland):
- Scale: 9% of the previous month's income, at least 432.54 zloty a month (February 2026 to January 2027). It is not deductible.
- Linear: 4.9% of income, same minimum. It is deductible up to 14,100 zloty in 2026.
- Lump sum: 498.35 zloty up to 60,000 zloty of revenue since January, 830.58 up to 300,000, 1,495.04 above.
There is an annual settlement. The previous year's computation goes into the ZUS DRA or RCA document for April, and you pay any difference with the April contribution, at the latest on 20 May (for 2025, that was 20 May 2026). If you overpaid, ZUS prepares a refund request for you to sign before 1 June.
Who can use small ZUS plus?
Your revenue for the previous year must not exceed 120,000 zloty. If you were active for only part of that year, the limit is prorated, and you need at least 60 days of activity; you cannot use it in your first year of business. Some people are excluded, among them partners of partnerships, the sole shareholder of a sp. z o.o., and certain artists and liberal professions.
You declare it by 31 January, or within seven days of the day you meet the conditions or resume your activity, with a code beginning with 05 90 or 05 92. Without the declaration on time and with the right code, ZUS considers that you waive it.
How do you register and pay ZUS contributions?
Register within seven days of starting, most simply by ticking the box in your CEIDG application on biznes.gov.pl. Otherwise use form ZUS ZUA (social and health insurance) or ZUS ZZA (health only, during ulga na start). Then pay by the 20th of the following month to your personal contribution account, and send the declarations (ZUS DRA) from your eZUS account, which you open with a trusted profile or another confirmed identity; see Poland e-government for expats.
Contribution holidays (wakacje składkowe): one month a year without social contributions, on request, if you insure at most ten people including yourself, but not during ulga na start. The health contribution stays due, it counts as de minimis aid, and you apply online on the ZUS portal (PUE ZUS) in the month before.
What if you work in two countries?
If you work in Poland, the Polish system applies. If you also work in another country, or are posted from your home country, the A1 certificate proves where you pay. A business you ran abroad under foreign social security does not, according to the government's Powroty portal citing ZUS, block the reduced base. For ulga na start, no official page deals with it: ask ZUS before registering.
Under EU rules, insurance periods in other EU countries are added together to open a pension right; see retiring in Poland. For Britons outside the Withdrawal Agreement, a protocol of the EU-UK trade agreement coordinates social security in a similar but not identical way: check your situation with ZUS.
What are the typical mistakes with ZUS contributions?
- Forgetting the health contribution during the free six months.
- Missing the small ZUS plus deadline, or using the wrong code.
- Working for your former employer in the same field, which loses ulga na start and the reduced base.
- Not thinking about the voluntary sickness insurance.
- Comparing tax rates only. The scale lets you share income with a spouse and claim the child credit, but its health contribution is not deductible; the linear tax has a lower health rate; the lump sum has fixed brackets. Compare the total of tax and contributions; see income tax in Poland for new residents.
Before you pick a relief, a tax regime or the sickness insurance, have your situation confirmed by a Polish accountant (księgowy) or by ZUS in writing. Contribution amounts are revised each year; check zus.pl.
