Slovak schools have a reputation for being demanding and a reality that is more open than you might expect. A child who arrives mid-year without a word of Slovak will be placed in a class and offered language lessons. What parents need is a calendar, because most deadlines are fixed in law and fall in spring.

This guide explains schools in Slovakia for expat children, from nursery to final exams.

How are the schools in Slovakia organised?

  • Jasle, nursery for the youngest, often paid. If you work or study and have a residence in Slovakia, the ÚPSVaR (labour, social affairs and family office) pays a childcare allowance until the child is three: at most 280 euros a month for a nursery under Act no. 561/2008. That is the base amount, which the government may raise each 1 January, so confirm the 2026 amount with the office.
  • Materská škola, kindergarten, from 3 to 6, possible from 2 if there is room. The last year, from age 5 on 31 August, is compulsory.
  • Základná škola, primary and lower secondary, nine years: first cycle years 1 to 4, second cycle years 5 to 9.
  • Stredná škola, upper secondary, including the gymnázium, up to the maturita, the school leaving exam.

Compulsory schooling lasts ten years, to the end of the year in which the child turns 16.

When and how do you enrol in schools in Slovakia?

Primary school (year 1): submit the application on the ministry form between 1 February and 31 March of the year of entry, then attend the zápis, the enrolment event, between 1 and 30 April with your child. The ministry also offers the ePrihlášky portal for online applications.

Kindergarten: apply to the school head between 1 April and 31 May with a paediatrician's certificate listing compulsory vaccinations. Children in the compulsory year go first.

Your child is assigned to the public school of the area (školský obvod) by permanent or habitual residence. You may choose another school if it accepts the child; those living in the area have priority. See best places to live in Slovakia for how your address shapes this.

The school calendar, vaccination certificate and translated reports can feel like a lot at once. Moovy can build a personalised timetable of the deadlines for your child's age and your town, then draft the application letter to the school in Slovak with an English translation. You submit it yourself.

What happens if you arrive mid-year?

For a foreign child without permanent residence, the school head places the child in a class without delay after your request, according to age, level and command of Slovak. A provisional placement by age is possible; a lower class needs your agreement. The school organises Slovak lessons and can adapt content and assessment to the child's Slovak level. Bring recent school reports with translations.

What does school cost?

Public school is free. Kindergarten charges a monthly contribution set by the municipality and capped by law; the compulsory year is free. School meals: the state aid (dotácia na stravu) is 1.40 euros a day in the compulsory kindergarten year, 2.10 euros in the first cycle and 2.30 euros in the second (2026), requested in writing through the canteen. The rest of the price is set locally.

When are the holidays in 2026-2027?

Lessons run from Tuesday 1 September 2026 to Wednesday 30 June 2027. All-Saints break 29 and 30 October 2026; Christmas 23 December 2026 to 7 January 2027; mid-year 1 February 2027; spring break 15 to 19 February 2027 (Banská Bystrica, Žilina, Trenčín regions), 22 to 26 February (Košice, Prešov) or 1 to 5 March (Bratislava, Nitra, Trnava); Easter 25 to 30 March 2027; summer from 1 July to 31 August 2027.

What about foreign diplomas and international schools?

A foreign school certificate is recognised by the regional school administration office (regionálny úrad školskej správy), a university degree by the Ministry of Education. The fee is 7 euros if Slovakia has a bilateral agreement with the country and 40 euros otherwise (Act no. 145/1995, schedule of 1 September 2026), half price online, with a decision within two months of a complete file. Ministry pages still show old amounts of 5 and 30 euros. Swiss qualifications are treated like those of the EU and EEA, whereas the UK is a third country. You need certified Slovak translations.

International schools are private and charge fees fixed by each school. In Bratislava, the French international school (358 pupils) is approved by the French ministry from the first year of nursery to the last year (AEFE, October 2026); only the very youngest section is not.

What are the traps?

  • Missing the February to March and April to May windows.
  • Forgetting the compulsory kindergarten year.
  • Assuming meals are free.
  • Arriving without translations.

Local rules on registration also depend on your municipality; see residence in Slovakia for EU citizens and moving to Slovakia.

How do the schools in Slovakia handle children who do not speak Slovak?

The school organises Slovak language lessons for foreign children and can adapt the content and the assessment to their level. The director places the child in a class according to age, level and Slovak. A lower class needs your agreement. In practice, ask the school before you enrol how many foreign pupils it has and what support exists, since arrangements depend on the school. Foreign children have the right to teaching, boarding and school meals on the same terms as Slovaks.

What is the school day like?

The school year runs from 1 September to 30 June. The detailed timetable depends on the school, so ask for it at the enrolment event. Remember that some holidays are no longer days off, so schools may hold classes; in 2026 they had classes on 15 September. See living in Slovakia.

What about childcare for the youngest?

For children under three, a nursery (jasle) is often paid. If you work or study and have a residence in Slovakia, the ÚPSVaR pays a childcare allowance until the child is three: at most 280 euros a month for a nursery under Act no. 561/2008, a base amount that the government can raise each 1 January, so confirm the 2026 figure with the office. Family benefits, including the child allowance and the parental allowance, are paid by the office of your place of residence.

Which school suits which family?

If you plan to stay for years, a public school gives your child the language and the friends of the neighbourhood. If you move often, or if your child is near the end of secondary school in another system, an international school may fit better, at a price set by the school. French families can use the French international school of Bratislava and may request a scholarship from the French embassy, depending on income. Czech families may benefit from a bilateral recognition agreement for diplomas.

What documents should you keep for school in Slovakia?

Passport or ID of the child, proof of residence, the paediatrician's certificate with vaccinations for kindergarten, recent school reports with translations, and for diploma recognition a certified copy, the transcript, a certified Slovak translation and proof of fee payment. For the general sequence of arrival steps, read moving to Slovakia.
