For a long time a British person could land in Larnaca, sign a lease and stay. Since Brexit the picture has two halves: people who settled before 1 January 2021, who keep rights under the withdrawal agreement, and everyone arriving since, who is a third-country national. If you are moving to Cyprus from the UK, the first job is to find out which half you belong to.

Which rules apply to you after Brexit?

If you want to stay more than 90 days as a visitor, GOV.UK says you must apply for temporary residency as a third-country national. Cyprus is not in the Schengen area, and when you visit Schengen countries from Cyprus you can stay visa-free up to 90 days in any 180. Always carry your passport and residence document; border officers may ask for proof of residence, such as a tenancy agreement or a utility bill.

For the exact permit categories (work, family, study, self-sufficiency) and documents, go to the Cypriot Migration Department before you travel. We cannot publish a complete list because categories and conditions are set by the Department and change. Ask early, as processing times can be long.

What if you moved before 1 January 2021?

Residents who arrived before that date hold rights under the withdrawal agreement. GOV.UK says your MEU residence document should be exchanged for a biometric MUKW card: with under five years of residence, use form MUKW1 for a five-year temporary card; with over five years, use form MUKW3 for a ten-year permanent card. Non-EU family members apply for an MUKW2 within four months of arrival.

Can you become a permanent resident or a citizen?

GOV.UK says you may be able to apply for permanent residency after five years or more of residence, via the Migration Department. Cyprus allows dual citizenship with the UK. The detailed conditions are set by the Cypriot authorities.

How do you drive on a UK licence?

You can drive in Cyprus on a UK licence for up to six months. To continue, you must exchange it, ideally before the six months end because processing takes time. You will need a check code from the DVLA (or DVA for Northern Ireland) and a visit to a Road Transport Department district office, with your residence permit. You cannot replace or renew a UK licence while living in Cyprus. An International Driving Permit does not replace the exchange. Licences from Gibraltar, Jersey, Guernsey and the Isle of Man cannot be exchanged and require a Cypriot test.

How does healthcare work?

For a temporary visit, the UK Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC) covers state-provided necessary care in the EEA. To settle, the situation changes: the Cypriot health system, GeSY, is open to people who ordinarily reside there and meet its categories, and a British pensioner may hold a UK-issued S1, which can be registered with GeSY. If NHS funds your care through an S1, GOV.UK asks you to contact the NHS Overseas Healthcare Team to cancel it if you go back. Until you are inside GeSY, keep private insurance. The full picture is in healthcare in Cyprus.

How are you taxed?

If you spend more than 183 days a year in Cyprus, you are tax resident, and the 60-day rule applies if you work or run a business there and keep a home. The 2026 bands are 0% up to €22,000, then 20% to 35%. The UK and Cyprus have a double-taxation treaty, and the UK government advises professional advice on your Cypriot tax. Newcomers can also access special regimes, such as the non-dom status and salary exemptions, on conditions that are technical: check them with the Tax Department or an adviser before you rely on them.

British pensioners claim the UK State Pension through GOV.UK's moving-abroad guidance, and whether a special rate on a foreign pension suits you depends on what the treaty says about your pension, so take advice.

What about work and property?

British citizens need a residence permit that allows work, unless their rights were acquired before 2021. Whether a given permit allows self-employment has to be confirmed with the Migration Department before you start. If you want to buy a home, you need prior permission from the district administration as a non-EU buyer (form COMM 145, free, two to three weeks). See buying property in Cyprus.

What should you do in what order?

  1. Decide which half you are in: before or after 1 January 2021.
  2. Ask the Migration Department about your permit category before travelling.
  3. Keep your UK licence and book the exchange before month six.
  4. Arrange private insurance, then GeSY if you qualify.
  5. Get your tax number and plan your first return; see the Cyprus tax identification number guide.

Which mistakes catch British movers?

  • Assuming you can stay like before. After 90 days a permit is required.
  • Letting the six-month licence window pass.
  • Living on a GHIC.
  • Skipping advice on the tax treaty. Pensions and rental income are the usual traps.
  • Believing Cyprus is in Schengen.

What about the northern part of the island?

GOV.UK and the Cypriot rules summarised here concern the areas controlled by the Republic. The northern part is not under its control. Residence, health cover, driving and property rules differ there, and the Republic's permits do not give rights in it. Read the FCDO's Cyprus travel advice and take specialist advice before any move connected to the north.

What is a sensible timeline for moving to Cyprus from the UK?

A sample sequence for a British person arriving after 1 January 2021.

  1. Well before you leave: contact the Migration Department about your permit category and gather the supporting documents. Ask the DVLA for a licence check code closer to the exchange date.
  2. Before you leave: if you hold a UK-issued S1, keep a copy; arrange private health insurance for the first months.
  3. On arrival: sign a lease, pay rent electronically, open a bank account.
  4. Within 90 days: have your temporary residence application filed. A stay beyond 90 days as a visitor is not allowed.
  5. Before month six: exchange your UK driving licence.
  6. First tax year: count your days, apply for your tax number and plan your return.

This sequence is why moving to Cyprus from the UK takes more preparation than it did before Brexit, and why it is worth starting the conversation with the Migration Department early. Our knowledge of the exact permit categories is limited to what GOV.UK publishes, so treat the Department as the source of truth.

What is the first step?

Write to the Migration Department with your situation and read GOV.UK's living-in-Cyprus page. Then open the moving to Cyprus checklist for the sequence of the first months.

Frequently asked questions

Can a British citizen live in Cyprus after Brexit?+

Yes, but as a third-country national. For a stay over 90 days you apply for temporary residence. Those who settled before 1 January 2021 hold rights under the withdrawal agreement and exchange their MEU document for a biometric card.

Can I get permanent residence in Cyprus?+

GOV.UK says you may be able to apply after living there for 5 years or more, through the Cypriot Migration Department.

How long can I drive on my UK licence?+

Up to six months. After that you must exchange it for a Cypriot licence, with a DVLA check code, and an International Driving Permit does not replace the exchange.

Does my GHIC work if I live in Cyprus?+

The GHIC covers necessary state-provided care during temporary stays. To settle you need a residence permit, and you may be able to register a UK-issued S1 with GeSY; keep private insurance until you are covered.

Can I keep my British passport?+

Yes. GOV.UK states that Cyprus allows dual citizenship with the UK, so you do not need to give up British citizenship.
