You land a job in Limassol. On the first morning the accountant asks for your "TIC", and you realise that no one has ever given you one. That is normal. Unlike a few countries that hand out a number the day you register, Cyprus waits for you to ask. The Cyprus tax identification number is yours to apply for, and the process is entirely online.

What is the Cyprus tax identification number?

The TIC (Tax Identification Code) is the number the Tax Department (Τμήμα Φορολογίας) of the Ministry of Finance assigns to every taxpayer. Documents for foreign authorities call it the TIN. It has eight digits followed by a capital Latin letter, such as 12345678L. Numbers issued through the Tax For All system since 27 March 2023 start at 60000000.

It identifies you for income tax, VAT and your tax return. It does not give you a right to live in Cyprus and it does not prove you are a tax resident, which is a separate question with its own tests set by the Tax Department.

Who needs to register?

Since the 2026 tax reform, the rules are wider than before.

  • A Cypriot tax resident with income, of any age.
  • A Cypriot tax resident aged 25 to 70 during the year, even with no income at all.
  • A non-resident with taxable income from Cyprus, such as rent from a flat.

Employees often wait until their employer needs the number, but there are other triggers: buying or renting out a property, being resident under the 60-day rule, or declaring a foreign pension. If you are in any doubt, apply: there is no fee mentioned on the official page.

How do you apply for a TIC step by step?

  1. Create a Tax For All (TFA) account. The Tax Department publishes account-creation guides, mostly in Greek, and an English guide called "Online Registration – Individual".
  2. Choose "Register as a new taxpayer". If you already have a number, for example from a notary or a bank, choose "Apply for access to a tax identification number (TIN)" instead.
  3. Upload your documents (see below).
  4. Note your number. It appears on every return you file.

The application is online only. There is no counter. The Department can ask for more documents during the review, and it publishes no processing time, so apply as soon as you meet one of the conditions and well before the deadline of your first return.

Which documents does the Tax Department ask for?

The official list depends on your situation.

  • EU or Swiss citizen already registered in Cyprus: your registration certificate (MEU1), all sides. When the form asks if you have a Cypriot ID card or alien registration certificate (ARC), answer "No".
  • EU citizen who has applied for the MEU1 but has not received it: proof that you paid the application fee, plus the documents in the next point.
  • No certificate or residence permit yet: an identity document (ID card, or a letter confirming your foreign tax or social security number), a recent photograph, and a letter explaining why you are registering, with supporting papers.
  • Depending on your case: a letter from your employer, a stamped employment contract or an ERGANI hiring declaration if you are an employee; a stamped sale or lease contract or a title deed if property is involved.

Which numbers get confused?

Three numbers circulate in Cyprus and people mix them up.

  • The TIC belongs to the Tax Department.
  • The social insurance number belongs to the Social Insurance Services and is used for contributions and benefits.
  • The registration certificate number belongs to the Migration Department.

If you are an employee, your employer pays your social contributions, the GeSY health contribution and your income tax on your behalf, so you rarely see the paperwork.

What does a TIC change for you?

A lot happens through it. You can file your return on Tax For All. From the 2026 income year onward, returns are filed on Tax For All only, not on the older TAXISnet portal. Self-employed people file their VAT returns there too. Your bank will also ask for your TIC to complete its tax self-certification, as part of international exchange rules (CRS). If you are already a Cypriot tax resident, give your TIC; if you are not, give your home country's number. A form left without a number, when your country issues one to everyone, can be treated as unreliable and the bank may block the account opening. See opening a bank account in Cyprus.

What can go wrong with the application?

  • Waiting for an automatic number. Cyprus does not send one.
  • Waiting for the MEU1 before applying. If you have no certificate yet, the Tax Department has a separate document list for that case, so you do not have to wait.
  • Missing the first return. Tax residents of 25 to 70 must file even without income from the 2026 income year. The legal deadline for a return is 31 July of the following year, often extended; the deadline for the 2025 income year is 31 October 2026.
  • Paying someone to do a free online form. A tax adviser is useful for planning, such as choosing between normal rates and the 5% pension option, not for the registration itself.

What about British citizens?

British citizens follow the same online procedure, but because they are third-country nationals since Brexit, they attach their residence permit, or the proof of payment of the application, rather than an EU registration certificate. The United Kingdom and Cyprus have a double-taxation treaty, and the UK government recommends professional advice on your tax position in Cyprus. See also moving to Cyprus from the UK.

What does the Cyprus tax identification number mean for three common profiles?

An employee. Your employer pays your income tax and social contributions through payroll. You still need the number if you have to file a return, and if you want to claim deductions such as rent, which are made through form T.D.59 and your annual return. Ask your employer whether it needs your TIC from day one.

A retiree. You are a tax resident of Cyprus aged between 25 and 70, so from the 2026 income year you must file a return even if your pension turns out to be tax-free. That requires a tax identification number, and the same number lets you declare the foreign pension and choose between the normal bands and the 5% option. Ask the Tax Department or an adviser which suits you.

A landlord who lives abroad. A non-resident who receives rent from a flat in Cyprus is registered for that income. A notary or a bank may already have given you a number; in that case choose "Apply for access to a tax identification number (TIN)" in Tax For All.

For all three, the Cyprus tax number for foreigners is applied for in the same portal, with the same document list, and you keep the same number for life.

Where should the TIC fit in your first weeks?

Place it right after the registration of your stay: MEU1 first, TIC second, because the certificate is the document the portal asks for. Then you can sign a work contract, report a lease, open a bank account, and file your first return with no scramble in the spring. The moving to Cyprus checklist shows where the tax number sits in the whole sequence.
