For most of its history, a Briton who wanted to live in Sweden filled in a form with the Tax Agency and waited for a number. Since Brexit the first move is different: you need a right to be here before the register will have you.

This guide covers moving to Sweden from the UK in the order that matters: status, work, the register, driving, health, money.

Do British citizens moving to Sweden from the UK need a permit?

Yes, unless you already have status. Since Brexit, British citizens, Scots included, are third-country nationals, so the EU free movement rules no longer apply to a new arrival.

There is one group in a different position: those who were living in Sweden with a right of residence before 31 December 2020. Under the Withdrawal Agreement they hold a residence status issued by the Migration Agency (Migrationsverket), with a card that carries a reference to Article 18.1 of the agreement. The Migration Agency also issues a certificate of permanent residence status. If that describes you, you are in a protected position; keep your card valid. In 2026 the agency began sending permanent residence card holders an automatic reminder to book a renewal appointment before the card expires.

Everyone else follows the usual rules for non-EU citizens: a permit for work, studies, family ties or another ground, granted by the Migration Agency before you register with the Tax Agency.

What are the main routes to a permit?

Work. The Migration Agency states that a work permit needs a monthly salary of at least 34,470 SEK, which is 90 per cent of the median salary, updated to 38,300 SEK on 16 June 2026. New work permit rules from 1 June 2026 also require comprehensive health insurance. The page we read did not detail the employer's offer or the collective agreement terms, so ask your employer to check the full conditions on the agency's work page.

Studies and family. Both have their own application routes on the Migration Agency's site. A family member of a British citizen who holds residence status can apply under the family category.

Frontier workers. British citizens living in another country but working in Sweden can ask for proof of status.

Because the thresholds change, treat any number in an article as a pointer and confirm it on the official page before you sign anything.

When can you register with the Tax Agency?

After the permit. With the permit in hand, you do what any newcomer does: notify your move to the Tax Agency (Skatteverket) with Flytta till Sverige if you stay a year or more, then attend an identity check at a service centre. You receive a personnummer with your registration. The sequence is in moving to Sweden: the step-by-step guide, and the number itself is explained in the personal number guide.

Can you drive on a British licence?

A British licence is one of the few non-EEA licences that can be exchanged for a Swedish one: the others are Swiss, Japanese and Faroese licences. The conditions, from the Transport Agency: you must meet the Swedish personal and medical requirements and be a permanent resident, meaning you live in Sweden at least 185 days a calendar year because of personal and professional ties. Unlike a Swiss licence, a British licence can be exchanged even after more than a year of registered residence.

The fee for producing the new licence is 375 SEK. You send your original licence to the agency, then attend a licence office for the photo and signature. Your old licence goes back to the issuing authority, so you do not get it back. Read driving in Sweden for the rest, including importing a right-hand-drive car, which does not qualify for the simplified route.

What about healthcare and benefits?

Once you hold a permit and are registered, you have access to care on the same terms as other residents, with the patient fee set by your region. Before that, you have no automatic claim on the system, so arrange insurance for the first weeks. The Social Insurance Agency (Försäkringskassan) decides if you are insured in Sweden for benefits, and notes that periods of work in the UK may still fall under UK social security. See healthcare in Sweden for expats.

If you are retired and draw a UK pension, the Social Insurance Agency applies S1 rules to British pensions as well: ask the UK body that pays your pension for the S1.

How does banking change?

Once you are a resident, you have the same right to a basic payment account as any resident of the EEA. What you lose is the European protection on euro payments from a UK account, because the United Kingdom is outside the EEA. Transfers from your British account are international payments now, so compare fees. A Swedish account needs a personnummer in practice, and without it BankID is out of reach. See bank account in Sweden.

How is tax handled?

Your tax residence depends on where you live and how long you stay, not on your passport. The Tax Agency treats you as fully liable if you are domiciled in Sweden or stay six months in a row. The UK and Sweden have their own tax treaty, which decides what is taxed where, particularly for pensions, rents and salaries. Read it before you leave, and declare foreign income in Sweden once you are resident. The Tax Agency's pages for people moving to Sweden explain the rules.

Can you buy a home in Sweden as a British citizen?

Yes. The 1992 law that required permits for property purchases was repealed on 1 January 2000, and the texts we read include no rule specific to foreigners. Banks still decide whether they will lend to you, and a loan without a personnummer or Swedish income is hard. See buying property in Sweden.

What documents should you prepare before moving to Sweden from the UK?

Prepare two sets of papers: the ones that prove your right to be in Sweden, and the ones that will matter once you are registered. For the first set, ask the Migration Agency's pages for the exact list for your permit category. For a work permit, that typically starts with an employer's offer and your passport; for family or studies, the relevant proof of the relationship or enrolment.

For the second set, gather your passport, your British driving licence (original, not a copy, if you intend to exchange it), school reports for children, your diplomas, and, if you are retired, the statement of your British pension and the details of the body that pays it. If you hold Withdrawal Agreement status, bring the card issued by the Migration Agency, which carries a reference to Article 18.1.

Keep one thing in mind about timing. The Tax Agency registers you only once your right to stay is established, so the permit comes first, then the notification of your move, then the identity check, then the personnummer. A month or two of delay at the start is normal. Build the schedule backwards from the date you need to start work or enrol your children.

If an authority asks for a translation of a document, ask whether it must be certified before you pay for one. When in doubt, ask the body that will receive the document.

Finally, check the treaty and social security position for your own career. Periods of work in the UK may still fall under UK social security, and the tax treaty between the UK and Sweden decides what is taxed where.

What should a Brit moving to Sweden from the UK do first?

Settle the legal basis before anything else: confirm whether you already have Withdrawal Agreement status, or find the permit that fits your job or family. Everything in Sweden that follows, the register, the number, the bank, depends on it.
